Cold snap continues across the UK by Alex Deakin

The freezing spell that has affected the UK over the past couple of weeks tightened its grip last night with temperatures plummeting down to -10C (14F) in places.

During Sunday night and into Monday, a band of snow spread south, affecting most parts of the country. Heavy snow fell across Manchester, Cheshire, the West Midlands and Central southern England, while London and the Home Counties received a dusting by Monday morning. Temperatures took a tumble during Monday night with subzero temperatures widely recorded across the UK.

In Farnborough, Hampshire, temperatures fell to -9.9C (14F), the lowest temperature here since January 1991. Temperatures fell to -9.5C (15F) in Woodford, Cheshire, but the coldest spot on Monday night was recorded in Aboyne, Scotland, where the mercury fell to -11C (12F).

The past few winters across the UK have been unusually mild with above average temperatures. So far the winter of 2008-2009 has been a particularly cold one with some of the lowest temperatures for 15 years. High pressure has been responsible for the long cold spell with arctic air being brought down from the north and northeast. With high pressure in control throughout, the air has been allowed to stagnate and remain cold across the UK and northwestern Europe.

Relief from the cold may be in sight next week, as some milder air off the Atlantic is expected to push up from the southwest.

بإذن الله راح تستمر هذه الموجة الباردة على الجزر البريطانية حتى 10 يناير ثم يحدث دفء نسبي بسبب انفراج المرتفعات عن الاجواء وهبوب رياح جنوبية محيطية اقل برودة حتى 16-17 يناير لتبدأ موجة اخرى ربما اقوى واكثر قسوة على اوربا بشكل عام وكذلك على الولايات المتحدة الامريكية وكندا حيث يخشى مراقبو الطقس ان تحصل عواصف ثلجية عارمة على الوسط وشرق الولايات المتحدة ووصول الحرارة الى -18 تحت الصفر على مدن الساحل الشرقي (نيويورك وواشنطن...)
